Could wolves lose endangered species protection in Oregon by 2015? - TopicsExpress

Could wolves lose endangered species protection in Oregon by 2015? Looks likely. Under Oregons wolf management plan, the state proposed removing wolves from the state ESA list when it can document at least four breeding pairs for three consecutive years. Since pups were documented in nine Oregon packs this year, it looks like the state will reach the required number and will recommend delisting. State delisting would affect wolves in the eastern third of Oregon. Wolves in the rest of Oregon, like OR-7 and his mate and pups in the Southwest Oregon Cascades, will remain protected under federal ESA. However, the proposal to remove gray wolves from protections of the federal ESA (everywhere in the US - except for Mexican wolves in AZ and NM) is still in place and will likely be decided by the US FWS and the Dept. of Interior before the end of the year. capitalpress/Oregon/20141001/oregon-wolf-numbers-could-trigger-delisting-in-2015/1
