Covenant Keeping - Steve McCracken Judges 2:1-2 (NIV84) The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I swore to give to your forefathers. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this?’” God has made a promise to us that He will never break His covenant commitment to us. This is incredible and wonderful. Our God, Almighty God, has made some promises to us that He has kept and will continue to keep. “I wonder if we are being faithful to the promises we have made to God?” We are created in God’s image. He is a covenant-keeping God. He is not casual or flippant in what He says. In fact, what He says is guaranteed to happen. And as image-bearers of our God, this should be the testimony of every Christian. “So are we covenant-keeping people?” Although we live in a time of amazing grace and unconditional love, I feel God would ask some people, “Why have you broken your commitment to Me?” This broken commitment to God is often not a wilful step away from God, but rather a gradual slide towards worldly thinking and living. Grace and love is not an excuse for sin, but the fuel to overcome it. Today I ask you on behalf of God: “Will you return to your First Love? Will you recommit yourself to living life in relationship with God and as a reflection of Him?” It’s time to stop some things and start others.
