Cracked it!!! Yes yes yes.........I now know who built the Kaihu Tavern yes yes yes happy me!!! I found the obituary of John Rowe aka Johnny Rowe and in it they listed the hotels he had built brilliant! Connection Moss Davis brewery owner of Hancock & Co Auckland. Career as a Builder Born at Bodmin, Cornwall, Mr. Howe served an apprenticeship in his native town as a cabinetmaker. At the age of 21 he decided to emigrate to New Zealand, and arrived at Nelson in January, 1876, by the ship Caroline. Soon afterward he was attracted to New Plymouth. Two years later, however, he moved to Onehunga, which was to be his home for the remainder of his life. Entering into partnership with the lato Mr. John Smith, Mr. Howe established the firm of Smith and Rowe, builders and contractors. In 1885 he commenced business on his own account, retiring in 1920. During his career as a builder he erected hotels in all parts of the Auckland province, including Raglan, Coromandel, Thames, Opotiki, Whakatane, Rotorua, Dargaville, Maungaturoto, Kaihu, Mangawhare, Kawakawa and Pahi.
