Creatures in the Garden, Part 3: Birds Nature’s Pest Control = Raptors & Bug Eaters While a few bird species have been known to eat garden fruits and berries, many are also extremely beneficial predators in the garden. Birds can help control populations of many garden and household pests including grasshoppers, caterpillars, rodents, and beetles. By providing suitable perches, hiding spots, and food sources you can attract many wonderful predatory bird species to your garden. Dense thickets of shrubs and small trees are great hiding and nesting spots for many of the smaller insectivorous species. Dead trees and limbs, fence post, and large trees are the favored perching and nesting areas for larger predatory birds such as hawks and owls.
