Crime-plagued Jamshedpur can hope for some technology-driven proactive policing. Jharkhand’s first Integrated Surveillance and Response Center (ISRC), an approximately Rs 50-lakh facility for swift action against any law and order situation, was inaugurated at the police control room in Sakchi on Sunday morning. State DGP Rajeev Kumar did the honours in the presence of zonal IG M.S. Bhatia, Kolhan DIG Mohammed Nehaluddin and East Singhbhum SSP Amol V. Homkar. Speaking on the occasion, DGP Kumar said ISRC would go a long way in not just stemming crime, but also curbing road accidents. He announced four more ISRCs in Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bokaro and Hazaribagh shortly. “A bunch of diligent policemen has been selected for training to run the hi-tech facility (in Jamshedpur). I examined the CCTV footages that will be monitored on giant computer screens. Crimes like snatching, robbing and assault in public places will be controlled in a better manner with the entire city being under surveillance soon,” he later told reporters. The ISRC is said to be the brainchild of SSP Homkar. Cameras at strategic points on city thoroughfares, a control room manned by trained personnel and mobile units are its three essential components. The objective is to respond against crime as soon as it takes place. There is no interim wait for a complaint. While the centre began functioning from Sunday, its full-fledged operations will take another couple of months. Currently, 25 CCTV cameras cover strategic locations in Bistupur, Sakchi and Golmuri under the ISRC. An additional 130 will be installed to cover the entire steel city. Camera feeds will be monitored 6am to 10pm every day by the group of trained policemen. They will co-ordinate with various police stations and also Mobile Tiger units over wireless for swift action. Elaborating on the benefits of the ISRC, DGP Kumar cited an instance of a car pile-up on a thoroughfare. “Once the surveillance and response centre starts functioning properly, police can easily determine whose fault caused the accident. Similarly, the CCTV footages will help nail criminals and corroborate the cases against them during trial.” Later in the afternoon, the DGP also launched the Jamshedpur Accident Relief and Medical Assistance (JARMA) at a function organised by Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Bistupur. Tata Steel managing director T.V. Narendran and senior doctors of the hospital were present as Kumar flagged off an ambulance. “JARMA is a new concept to meet medical emergencies on the road like an accident. A victim will be rescued and transported to Medica by a police ambulance equipped with paramedics. The toll free number is 100 and ETA is 10 minutes,” the police chief said The district police, Tata Steel and Medica are together sponsoring this initiate. While police have provided six ambulances and manpower for the purpose, Tata Steel’s contribution is paramedics and Medica will handle treatment. Do you think the ISRC will be able to arrest the crime graph?
