Crystal Lee posted this update on Nathaniels Medical Condition today: The decision has been made to stay with Dr Wellons, chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Vanderbilt. He trained under a world-class surgeon at Duke, and they highly recommended him. Nathaniels surgery will be Wednesday, July 9th and will take approximately 6 hours. The goal is to eliminate the cystic (fluid) components and debulk some of the solid mass. However, he will not attempt be overly aggressive, since the tumor resides in the motor, visual and memory areas of the deep brain. The end goal is to reduce the tumor burden so that chemo has a better chance of being successful. Whether symptoms will improve depends on what they find once in- slight increase or decrease are both possibilities. This is partly because the edges and levels of separation from key functions is unknown. They intend to err on the side of caution and allow chemotherapy a chance to do the rest. The hospital stay is one week on average, with possible in-patient rehab following. I will be praying for a successful operation and speedy recovery.
