Current Affairs Global - 23 November 2013 1. Nisha Desai Biswal was sworn in as the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia. United States Secretary of State John K Kerry administered the oath to Nisha Desai Biswal as she was sworn in as the US Assistant Secretary of State at the George Marshall East Auditorium of the White House. Nisha Desai Biswal will oversee the US Foreign Policy and relations at the State Department for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This is the first time an Indian-American is heading the South Asia Bureau. 2. At the same time, US President Barack Obama has appointed yet another Indian American, Gargee Ghosh, to a key administration post as member of his Global Development Council. Ghosh is currently the director of Policy Analysis and Financing (PAF) at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. PAF is the foundations internal policy shop focused on priorities, trends and innovations in international development financing. Its work spans aid policy, country financing and engagement with international financial institutions. 3. Leading stock exchange of USA, the Dow Jones index closed at a new all-time high on Friday, after closing above the 16,000 mark for the first time on Thursday. At close of trade the Dow was up by 54.78 points, or 0.34%, at 16064.77. Also the broader S&P 500 index of 500 companies closed above 1,800 for the first time at 1,804.76. 4. Five-time title-holder Viswanathan Anands reign as the world champion came to an end today with Norways Magnus Carlsen taking the crown after a hard-fought draw in the 10th game of the World Chess Championship match. Carlsen closed the championship with two games to spare by taking his tally to required 6.5 points against 3.5 by Anand. With this win, Magnus Carlsen becomes the youngest World Chess Champion.
