Current Motion: The LNC-Discuss email list archives will be made available from June 30, 2014 forward and a Google group established, similar to the procedure for LNC-Business. - Sponsor Nick Sarwark Evans Vote: In my professional dealings, as a political and PR consultant, there is often a need for heightened security and confidentiality. Whether it be political strategy or election and campaign finance law interpretations the public airing, leaking, or accidental sharing of information can have dire consequences. The Libertarian National Committee is charged not only with the day-to-day management of the party, but also pursuing legal actions to protect and advance the party and developing political and messaging strategies that further the short and long term goals of the party. In the early stages, this information must be closely held. How do I ensure that the strategies and interpretations I develop in my professional work do not prematurely or inadvertently become public? By NEVER putting them to pen and paper, or email. In almost every case for every type of organization, the initial outlines and broad strokes of sensitive issues are either discussed face to face or via phone. When the basic blueprint for proceeding has been developed you go to the next stage. In our case that would be full discussion, debate, and then an action by the elected members of the LNC. So if I have a plan for supporting a candidate in a tight and high profile race, I will first draft what I think we should and can do, ask for input from some of my colleagues via phone, and then submit the plan to the board for discussion and an up or down vote. Upon being elected to serve on the LNC I was never instructed that the Discuss list was confidential. To my knowledge there is no Policy Manual rule that makes it confidential. In fact, I’ve seen entire threads from emails posted publicly at places like IPR, Facebook, in convention handouts, and in a yahoo groups. I’ve even had highlights emailed to me. I started my term understanding that anything I say via email can, and will, be posted publicly with or without my consent. To the motion, I believe that our party has become fractured along lines drawn based off the perceived actions and intentions of previous LNC boards. I would like to see these divisions healed and hope that if the membership can see the back and forth debates between the LNC members I think they just might. On my first email ballot and first substantive vote as an elected member of LNC is Yes in support of the motion. In Liberty, Evan McMahon At-Large Rep.
