DA calls for urgent appointment of permanent director of economic development The DA is concerned that job creation in Nelson Mandela Bay is not being taken seriously by the ANC. The ongoing absence of a permanent Executive Director for Economic Development is crippling our local economy and undermining job opportunities. The DA is alarmed at the lack of direction and leadership in this department, currently led by its second Acting Executive Director in as many years. The absence of real, strong and visionary leadership under the ANC has filtered through to what is arguably the most important directorate within the metro to stimulate job creation and economic growth. The increasing cost of doing business in Nelson Mandela Bay is an inhibiting factor for job creation in our metro as it discourages investment. Delays in rezoning and land applications frustrate the business community and investors and the ongoing internal instability and adverse audit opinions contribute even further to the uncertainty within the business community. As a result unemployment remains one of the greatest challenges facing our metro and it is incumbent upon this directorate to provide the leadership and vision required to tackle this crisis of massive unemployment in the Metro. The days of riding on the coat tails of entities such as the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) who have really given us a shining example of how to grow investment on the back of a tough global economy, must come to an end. The Economic Development directorate must broaden its horizons and develop a culture of innovation. The DA will bring economic opportunities and create jobs in Nelson Mandela Bay by ensuring top posts are filled by qualified permanent directors in all departments. We will provide clear policy direction and work to cut the red tape that is currently strangling our economy. We will open Opportunity Centres that assist entrepreneurs and established businesses to work with government in a more efficient manner. Most importantly we will eliminate the corruption that is killing job creation in our Metro. ______________________________________ Issued by: Cllr Dean Biddulph DA caucus, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro ______________________________________
