DAILY TIMES (January 18, 2015) Speakers Laud AIOU’s Role For Promoting Local Languages ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a two-day international conference on Brahui language and literature began here on Saturday at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) lauded the role of the open university for promoting Pakistani languages. The conference was arranged by the Brahui Academy Pakistan with support of the AIOU’s Pakistani languages Department and Sughar Empowerment Society. Senator, Nawabzada Mir Haji Lashkari Khan Raisani was the Chief Guest while AIOU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui presided over the conference. Other speakers included Chairman Brahui Academy Pakistan, Dr M Salahuddin Mengal, Member Federal Public Service Commission, Ahmed Bakhsh Lehri, Taxila Institute of Asian Civilizations (Quaid-e-Azam University), Prof Dr Muhammad Ashraf Khan, Radio Pakistan, Khuzdar (Balochistan) Station Director Sultan Ahmed Shahwani, and AIOU Faculty of Social Sciences, Dean, Prof Dr Rashid A Naeem. A large number of writers, poets, academicians and speakers from home and abroad were also present. AIOU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui said that there are 69 languages around the country out of which 25 to 27 were in dying condition, there is dire need to animate these languages as it is fundamental instrument to educate the people and promote the society. Besides holding of seminars/ workshops at national and international level, academic support is required to promote Pakistani languages and today we have gathered to promote Brahui language, he added. He further said AIOU’s Pakistan Languages’ Department is actively engaged in promotion of Pakistani languages. The department offers courses on different languages including Brahui. There are 15 to 20 thousands students enrolled at AIOU from Balochistan province and 4-students have completed their M.Phil in Brahui language, he said. Nawabzada Mir Lashkari Raisani and other speakers appreciated the vision and mission of AIOU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui for promoting Pakistani languages particularly the dying languages and underlined the need of academic and administrative support from other organizations.
