DARK MATTER: Portrait of a Cabinet Minister Copyright c January 2, 2011 by Julie Rauer, Co-Founder of ART SCIENCE COMPLEX; Watercolor on Bristol Vellum; 18 x 11 inches. --Creating a human avatar for unseen dark matter, the invisible material comprising most of the mass of the universe, Julies painting employs concepts in Astrophysics to manifest the unseen in the character of a venal man, whose corrupt and insidious presence is expertly veiled, but exerts a ferocious gravitational pull on everyone in his sphere of influence. Artifacts of culture and tools of a traditional Chinese scholar utilized in objects still to be created, analogize cold dark matter and hot dark matter, respectively--the slow-moving massive particles of an historical legacy, coexisting with the fast-moving particles of a hijacked cultural trust, subjected now to ever shifting intent. Quantum fluctuations--and rapid expansion during inflation--are manifested by astronomical proportions of particles (in this case, the flesh of a deeply flawed man) in perpetual turmoil, occupying even apparently empty space, personifying key aspects of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Inspired by Somerset Maughams short story, The Cabinet Minister (1922), Julie invents and visualizes the fractured thief of hoarded culture as a metaphor of progressive science.
