DAY 34: Results of Psychiatric Evaluation and DR GERRY VERSFELD CALLED TO THE STAND The court day began with Advocate Gerrie Nel reading from the report on Pistorius’ Psychiatric Evaluation. It showed that during the time of the offence in question – Reeva Steenkamp’s shooting - the accused was not affected by a mental disorder in accordance with the appreciation of rightful or wrongful nature of his deeds. Both Judge Masipa and Defence Advocate Barry Roux requested more time to go through the report but the Defence did not contest these general findings. Dr Gerald Versfeld was then called to the stand. He is the 13th defence witness and the orthopaedic surgeon who performed the below-the-knee amputation on Oscar Pistorius when he was 11-months-old. Versfeld ten testified towards and demonstrated that Pistorius does not have balance while on his stumps, especially in the dark. He added that it was improbable that Pistorius would have been able to strike a bat while on his stumps and that the bottom of his stumps are very tender. Versfeld said that Pistorius falls sometimes once a week due to instability on his stumps, that he baths rather than showers as he cannot stand upright on his stumps for longer than a minute or two, and that his dogs could also knock him over when he is balancing on his stumps.
