DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TRIVIA Benjamin Franklin first suggested the idea of DST. On a visit to France in April 1784, Franklin first proposed the idea in an essay as a way to save candles. In April 1916, Germany was the first to adopt DST, with Great Britain following in May 1916. Today, about 70 countries around the world observe it. Arizona and Hawaii are the only U.S. states that dont observe Daylight Saving Time. The U.S. first used DST during wartime. In an effort to conserve resources, U.S. Congress placed the country on Daylight Saving Time for seven months during World War I. The law was repealed but then reinstated during World War II. Countries near the equator dont need DST. Since countries close to the equator already have more daylight hours than most, many dont feel the need to change the clocks. The primary reason is to save energy. The Department of Transportation found that the extra hour of daylight saves 10,000 barrels of oil each day. Accidents increase right after clocks turn back. A Carnegie Mellon study found that pedestrians are three times more likely to be killed by a car due to drivers adjusting to the earlier dusk time. In 2007, DST was extended one month. Before then, it happened in April and October. Now, it occurs in March and November.
