DECEMBER 2014 -- In This Issue In 1950, the UN General Assembly proclaimed December 10 as Human Rights Day to bring attention to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is, according to the declaration, the “common standard of human achievement for all peoples and all nations.” Education is a right, and not a privilege. It is enshrined in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, a multi-lateral treaty adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1966. It is unfortunate that in some countries of the world, some children, especially girls, are denied this right. In the Philippines, there have been major strides taken to achieve the goal of access to education for all. It is a task that involves many levels of engagement by different sectors of society. It includes empowering parents so that the education of children can be sustained and encouraged, and also includes empowering the teachers themselves. To this enormous task, our magazine has made its humble contribution through the years. For this issue, we tie together the topic of basic education for all with the celebration of Family Week. Indeed, family involvement is an integral part of educating the child. Editor Patria A. C. Beltran contributes an article on the former celebration of Mother’s Day in December. Urban Poor Solidarity Week, Barrio Improvement Week and Youth Prayer Day also occur in December and these celebrations gain more meaning when viewed together as necessary components in the work toward attaining education for all. Even more meaningful is the celebration of Rizal Day as we know that our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal was a primary advocate of the importance of education in society. To the individual’s right to a better and dignified life, to the family, the country, to God be the glory on this month of the birth of the Child Jesus. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
