DECEMBER 24TH - I’ve always been a great advocate of the Beatles’ early work. Understandably their later years have won most of the plaudits, but their early brilliance should never be ignored. Just look at the tracks that were never UK singles - I Saw Her Standing There, It Won’t Be Long, All My Loving, You Can’t Do That, Any Time at All, Eight Days a Week, I’ll Follow the Sun, You’re Gonna Lose That Girl and The Night Before. In an era when albums weren’t yet recognised as artistic statements, the Beatles were sometimes accused of wasting songs like this on albums, which seems a strange accusation nowadays. Great though this period was, it probably lasted about the right amount of time. Their first mature album “Rubber Soul” was written and recorded in October/November 1965 roughly the same period of time as it had taken Charles Dickens to write “A Christmas Carol” 122 years earlier. Both made a huge impact and continue to challenge, inspire and entertain to this day. Merry Christmas Everyone!
