DENZEL WASHINGTON FIGHTING A RACIST INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE, SAYS SONY PRODUCER Article Find my channel Zip Code Denzel Washington Fighting A Racist International Audience, Says Sony Producer An unnamed producer warns against casting black actors due to a racist international market Camille Travis Posted: 12/18/2014 10:15 AM EST Filed Under Denzel Washington, Whats Good, Celebrity Scandal, Entertainment News, Film News, Sony, The Equalizer Comment In not-so-shocking news, a newly leaked email from Sony suggests Denzel Washington is a hard sell when releasing a film to the international market because black actors, in general, dont appeal to a global audience. According to Radar Online, the message was sent from an unnamed producer to Sony Chairman Michael Lynton shortly after the release of The Equalizer in September. S/He voiced their concerns about casting Washington, a two-time Oscar winner, because black actors dont typically perform well at the international box office. No, I am not saying The Equalizer should not have been made or that African American actors should not have been used (I personally think Denzel is the best actor of his generation), the producer wrote. SHONDA RHIMES CALLS SONYS LEAKED REMARKS RACIST Casting him is saying we’re ok with a double if the picture works. Hes reliable at the domestic [box office], safe, but has not had a huge success in years. I believe whenever possible the non event pictures, extra bets should have a large inherent upside and be made for the right price. Here there isn’t a large inherent upside. The Equalizer grossed more than $191 million at the box office, with approximately 47 percent of ticket sales coming from outside the United States. Yet the email went on to state that other films bring in approximately 65 percent of the sales abroad, and theres a clear reason behind the disparity. I believe that the international motion picture audience is racist — in general pictures with an African American lead don’t play well overseas, the producer continued. But Sony sometimes seems to disregard that a picture must work well internationally to both maximize returns and reduce risk, especially pics with decent size budgets. SONY EXEC CALLS KEVIN HART A WHORE IN LEAKED EMAIL The hacked email is part of an ongoing leak of information from a group of hackers known as Guardians of Peace. The individuals are responsible for Sony pulling the plug on the release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy, The Interview, after threatening a 9/11-style attack on any movie theater showing the film. In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release, the studio said in a statement Wednesday. We respect and understand our partners decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.
