DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND BUREAU OF FISHERIES AND AQUATIC RESOURCES DELEGATION VISITS SPAIN 08 August 2014 – The Philippine Embassy in Madrid received a delegation from the Department of Agriculture (DA) during their official visit to Madrid from July 1 to 5 which was headed by the Secretary of Agriculture Proceso J. Alcala who was accompanied by nine other officials and technical experts from the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. Secretary Alcala met with the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), Hon. Isabel García Tejerina, and with Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (AECID) Director for Multilateral, Horizontal and Finance Affairs Laura Lopez de Cerain and AECID Director for African and Asian Affairs Alberto Virella. The meetings were an opportunity for Secretary Alcala to express gratitude for Spain´s assistance to the victims of typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda and to update the Spanish officials on the latest developments in post-Yolanda reconstruction efforts, as well as AECID´s support to the DA. Secretary Alcala also visited the facilities of COVAP in Pedroches and MercaMadrid and Carrefour in Madrid. COVAP (Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches) is a cooperative of farmers from Pedroches (Córdoba), Serena (Badajoz) and Alcudia (Ciudad Real) Valleys with headquarters in Pozoblanco. COVAP was established in 1950 and was a leading Spanish brand that produces and distributes its dairy, meat and animal-feed products. MercaMadrid houses wholesale markets for: 1) fish and seafood; 2) meat and poultry; and 3) fruits and vegetables, along with storage and transportation facilities. MercaMadrid is Europe’s largest market for perishable food items and its fish and seafood section is the second largest in the world after Tsukiji in Tokyo. The market is home to some 800 businesses, employs over 20,000 people, with consumer coverage at 12 million and covers an area of 176 hectares. END
