DFO has closed search and rescue stations in Lark Harbour and Port au Choix for the winter. In a statement, the coast guard said its stations are strategically located to provide assistance as quickly as possible in order to minimize loss of life, injury and property damage at peak times during the year. The coast guard says it uses icebreakers, other vessels of opportunity, and military aircraft to assist with calls in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during the winter months.
