DID THE GHANA MEDIA GIVE SHORT SHRIFT TO THE PARIS - TopicsExpress

DID THE GHANA MEDIA GIVE SHORT SHRIFT TO THE PARIS ATTACK? Newspapers in Ghana gave scant attention to yesterdays murderous Paris attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper. Journalist Kwasi Gyan Apente posts the complaint below on face book. An Island called Ghana? he asks. Predictably, that opens the floodgates for readers to see the issue from many different angles, probing into why Ghana has become insular or inward-looking. One critic cynically observed that an equivalent event in Ghana would not make much news in France. Other answers range from looks at the educational system, to how the less-than-strong African economies affect our voice. It was big news when Independent Algeria appointed Frantz Fanon as her Ambassador to Ghana. When Shirley Temple Black was appointed US Ambassador to Ghana in the seventies, the post in Ghana was described as a coveted and a prestigious one. Of course, extroverted and voluble Nkrumah, when he was President, had given the country a huge voice in the affairs of the then world. Nkrumah had even championed a March to the Sahara to protest French Nuclear tests in the Sahara Desert. He did that with a buoyant media. From that high watermark, there has been a tapering off, to where one critic now says the top National Newspaper has become an advertisement for funerals. What do you think? What are some of the problems Africas media face, in covering international affairs? Will the media follow the tone set by the Government in a country bogged down by internal problems and avoid international issues?
