“DID YOU KNOW?” Why is the City Council looking at installing an Ice Floor at the Events Center? There have been several questions concerning the project to construct a second sheet of ice at the Events Center. This project has been in the planning stage for several years. The first opportunity for funding came in 1998 as part of 1%#11 when the Citizen’s Committee recommended that $825,000 be allocated to the Leisure Services Advisory Board for the purpose of design and installation of a sheet of ice at the Casper Events Center. The funding was dependent on the private sector raising the balance of the cost of the project which would be determined after the design was completed. This proposal never went forward because the private funding was not raised. The design documents have formed the basis of the current proposal and are being updated by an engineering firm that specializes in Ice Floors. This project is supported by a $1 million donation from a private individual who supports the local youth hockey program. The second sheet of ice will provide additional ice time for the growing number of young people who want to participate in hockey. The Community of Casper has consistently invested in facilities which support youth sports including Casper Youth Baseball (The Field of Dreams), Casper Youth Soccer and Midget Football. The funding for this project which is estimated to cost $2,600,000 will be from one-time monies allocated by the State of Wyoming and the private donation.
