DOAC Primary Picks These picks are based on animal friendliness. If we can get an animal friendly NYC, even for just a few years, it will be possible to reform many of our anti-animal/pet owner laws. Don’t take the percentages for granted as Quinn is running a good “ground game” (she has the $ from developer donations) and could still win. Please get out and vote Tuesday. Mayoral Primary Candidates Democrat • Bill de Blasio, New York City Public Advocate[46] 347-746-2455, info@billdeblasio Republican • John A. Catsimatidis, businessman, owner of companies including the Red Apple Group, the Gristedes supermarket chain and the United Refining Company (has received the Liberal Party nomination)[5] 212-974-3145, Info@Cats2013 City Council • Yetta Kurland, Lawyer, community activist and animal advocate extraordinaire (646) 801-8190 -- Email: yetta@yettakurland Borough President • Gale Brewer, New York City Council member, (D) (212) 531-2013, info@galebrewer Public Advocate Primary Candidates • Daniel Squadron, State Senator for parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, (646) 801-7824, Campaign@squadronfornewyork, squadronfornewyork/contact Comptroller Primary Candidates • Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President[19] stringer2013/ The following letter was submitted to the Villager newspaper but was not published (not one anti-Quinn letter was published.) It was my intention to bring up issues that had not been reviewed lately as a reminder of Quinn’s poor record as our representative in the city council: the St Vincents debacle (losing our only hospital), the NYU debacle (removing the NYU Housing parks to build more condos, etc.,) the Village being walled in by 15 story buildings under Quinn’s watch. Letter to the Editor The NY pet owning & animal loving communities have a lot riding on this election so I was dismayed with the Villager’s choice for mayor. A Quinn win would make the next 12 years very oppressive for NYC pet owners & we could lose many rights we now take for granted. For instance, the League for Humane Voters gave Quinn a 0% for her record on animal issues. As speaker of the City Council, Quinn voted against pet owners consistently, including twice preventing a bill, supporting pets in housing, from even getting to the floor for a vote! New Yorkers should not be deprived of the proven benefits of living with a companion animal, especially our children & seniors. Our district has a critical shortage of parkland, but with Gansevoort, the only natural peninsula on our waterfront, not only did Quinn lobby to put a recycling center there, she lobbied to run the Spectra pipeline there also, next to the children’s play pier. We all know that accidents happen - the placement of the pipeline next to the playground is reprehensible. We could have had a grove of trees, a lawn where you didn’t hear the traffic with each green light & maybe a “Get-down” but instead we will get constant diesel truck traffic (this is the ”Quinn effect.”) According to the Health Department, Queens & the Bronx each need an animal shelter but Quinn blocked these shelters from being built. What goes on in the overwhelmed NYC shelter system is inhumane & unnecessary but Quinn wants it to stay the same. We can do much better with a more humane mayor. Informed animal lovers can help vote in officials who support a less cruel city. My puppy slipped while at the Run when attempting to jump onto a bench & instead smashed her face into it. She bled all the way home but our city council person, Quinn, turns a deaf ear to dog owners in her district whose dogs continue to be injured at the Leroy St Run. Dog owners have agreed to pay for a new surface, but the HRPT will not cooperate with us in order to move forward. We have gotten no help from Quinn who has ignored her (large) dog owning constituency to the point where for 12 years we have no council representation at all. At every opportunity Quinn has chosen in favor of special interests & betrayed the people who voted her into office. If past behavior is any indication, for families with children, the many people whose dog/cat is their family & any animal lover, a Quinn win would be a disaster.
