DON’T FORGET TO FAST ON THE 9TH & 10TH OF THIS MONTH - TopicsExpress

DON’T FORGET TO FAST ON THE 9TH & 10TH OF THIS MONTH (MUHARRAM) Ibn `Abbas (Rodiyallaahu ‘anhu) said, “I never saw Allaah’s Messenger (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of `Aashooraa (10th of Muharram), and this month (Ramadan).” [Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1867] In another hadith we are told that fasting the day of `Aashooraa expiates the sins of the previous year as the Prophet (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) said, “Fasting the day of `Aashooraa (is of great merits), I hope that Allaah Subhaanahu wata’aala will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year.” [Muslim] If we have the power we can fast on the 9th & 10th Muharram, & if we like we can fast only on the 10th. Ibn `Abbas (Rodiyallaahu ‘anhu) quoted the Prophet (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) as saying, “If I live next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day.” [Musnad Ahmad, hadith 2002] #NOTE - Fasting the Day of `Aashooraa is not to mourn the martyrdom of Husain (Rodiyallaahu ‘anhu). We Ahlus-Sunnah deeply respect Husain’s martyrdom, we honor his glorious act of sacrifice for the sake of Islaam. He gave us a great example of truth, courage & piety. But we also feel pain & grief in our hearts for his assassination at the hand of some hypocrites who took Islaam as a pretext to commit their crime. They fought & killed Allaah’s Messenger’s beloved & blessed grandson & his family. This was the most heinous & shameful crime that was committed for the sake of political power. This tragic event took place in the year (roughly) 61 AH. However, the tradition of `Aashooraa fasting is very ancient & it goes back to a long time before Husain, as ‘Ashooraa’ is a Fast recommended for us by Rasool. After the hijrah when the Prophet (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah also used to observe Fast on the tenth of Muharram (which we call `Ashooraa’). The Prophet (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, “This is a blessed day. On this day Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa fasted on this day giving thanks to Allaah.” The Prophet said, “We have more claim to Musa (‘Alaehis-Salaam) than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. [Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865] & In another report it is mentioned that Jews of Madinah used to hold a feast on this day (Maharram 10), The Prophet (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) told his Companions to fast instead. [Al-Bukhari, hadith 1866] _____________________ `Aashooraa fasting was obligatory (fard) in the beginning (of Islaam). But in the second year of hijrah when Allaah’s command came that Muslims should fast the whole month of Ramadan (2:183), the Prophet (Sollallaahu ‘alaehi wa sallam) then sent someone to announce to people that fasting of `Ashooraa had become voluntary (Nafl). This indicates that whosoever wishes to fast may fast & whosoever does not want to fast, there will be no blame on him/her. *IT’S ADVISABLE WE FAST ON THE TWO DAYS (I.E 9TH & 10TH OF MUHARRAM), OR ATLEAST ON THE 10TH DAY IF WE ARE FIT…IF RASOOL (WHO WAS MOST FEARFUL OF ALLAAH) USED TO FAST THIS ‘AASHOORAA’ & RECOMMENDED IT FOR US, WHO ARE WE (THAT ARE NOT UP TO HIM IN ALLAAH’S SIGHT) NOT TO??? Allaah Subhaanahu wata’aala is the granter of success.
