DUAL OR NON-DUAL, THAT IS THE QUESTION I believe that most of us - TopicsExpress

DUAL OR NON-DUAL, THAT IS THE QUESTION I believe that most of us live in a dualistic universe. This is neither good nor bad, necessarily. We couldn’t survive if we didn’t think dualistically---discriminately. Our brain is equipped to think dualistically, in fact. It has evolved to be able to judge distance, up and down, left and right, tall or short, smart or dumb, good or bad, safe or dangerous, etc, etc, etc. But in the world of God, there is no dualism. There is only “This”; or as the mystics say: “Thisness”. Even in the ancient Jewish text, when Moses asks God, when God sends him out to tell Pharaoh to set his people free, who shall I say sent me? God replies: “Tell the ‘I AM’ sent you.” So even God is telling us that He/She is “Thisness” or “Am-ness”. An example of this in our ordinary world would be the notion of “The Body of Christ”. In the Roman Catholic tradition, The Body of Christ is both the Holy Euhcarist---ordinary bread and ordinary wine, made into the “real” Body and Blood of Christ via the Priest who resides. And it is us! We, the members of One True Body, are the Body of Christ. How can this be? How can the Body of Christ be both bread and wine and the members of the human race? This is clearly non-dual thinking.
