Daily Lent Devotion Thursday, March 27; Luke 22:49-51 Violence is a part of our human nature. We are shocked when we first see evidence of it in our two year-old children as they push other children to get what they want. We try to control in in our “civilized” society, but we all know that it’s there – just below the surface, ready to reveal itself at the slightest provocation. We see it in road rage, in domestic violence, and even in the caustic words that we use when we disagree. More rules, more laws, more police, bigger armies – none of these will eliminate the threat of violence in our lives. There is only one solution – the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus wouldn’t even tolerate violence against those who were taking him to his death. True faith abhors violence. I am not naïve – I know that no one has been able to eliminate the need for active, perhaps even violent, resistance to evil in this world, but we can do two things. First we can celebrate that we will someday live in a world with no violence. Secondly, we can let the Holy Spirit work through us to eliminate our own inclination to violence, and do all we can to fulfill what we pray: “Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.”
