Daily Manna Update, Saturday 28, September 2013 Topic: Honesty Is It TEXT: MATTHEW 5:33-37 KEY VERSE: “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil” (Matthew 5:37). In a recent Moody Monthly, George Sweet wrote about the desperate need for honesty in our culture. He referred to one Dr. Madison Surratt, who taught mathematics at Vanderbilt University for many years. Before giving a test, the professor would admonish his class thus: “Today, I am giving two examinations, one in mathematics and the other in honesty. I hope you will pass them both. If you must fail one, fail mathematics.” In the text today, Jesus emphasised the importance of telling the truth. People in His time were breaking sacred promises and using sacred language casually, with the least consideration for honesty and integrity. Keeping vows and respecting human relationships were observed largely in their breach. Yet, the Bible cautions: “Let us walk honestly, as in the day, not in rioting and drunkenness.” Falsehood not only disagrees with basic truth, it equally depreciates dignity and integrity. Yet, honesty and truth remain the basis of every virtue. Paul appropriately counsels: “that ye may approve things that are excellent: that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ” (Philippians 1:10). The loss of security is the loss of vital power for no man can produce a great thing who is not thoroughly sincere in dealing with his sins. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy“ (Proverbs 28:13). How greatly God values honesty. He cannot hear us or speak to us when we build a wall of deception around us, for God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. We can, today, possess a life of integrity and honour if we truly make Jesus the Pillar, indeed the essence of our life. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Integrity is more valuable than wealth.
