Daily Pearl: Lung CA is a devastating disease and the leading cause of cancer-related death in men and women in the the U.S. (150,000 deaths/year). Lung CA does not have to be devastating. Why? We have screening for lung CA now! First of all, no one should ever be screened for lung CA with a chest X-ray. The appropriate screening test is a low-dose CT scan of the chest. Who should be screened? Current or former smokers between the ages of 55-74 who have at least a 30 pack-year history of smoking (number of packs of cigarettes smoked daily on average x the number of total years of smoking).
