Daily Times, Eau Claire, Wis. page 1, January 28, 1904 WOLVES NUMEROUS Said to Be Killing Deer to a Rather Alarming Extent. The law makes it an offense to kill deer certain seasons, but the bounty on wolves is so low that few of the hunters take trouble to kill them. Instead of the deer being killed off by hunters, as some people believe, the deer are in reality being killed by the wolves, which it is claimed are increasing rapidly. Such is the opinion of M. A. Bennett, cruiser for the John S. Owen Land Co. He said today that the wolves were so thick in the Jump River country that they were becoming troublesome; that the bounty should be raised so hunters will feel that it pays to kill them; that as it is the bounty on wolves hardly pays the hunter for trying to kill these pests; that every day the wolves can kill any number of deer but as yet the wolves have not become bold enough to attack men in their travels through the woods. Mr. Bennett also says that there are indications of a large panther about the camp at Jump River, that in fact the critter has been seen. All the boys in camp are hot after it and in time it will probably be killed. Mr. Bennett says the men in the woods dont mind the severe cold as much as people in the cities.
