Dancing in an Eastern Dream A micro-biography Chapter 7: Here Come the Women There was a large increase in women in the Air Force soon after I joined. First, there was a trickle and we set aside one wing of a dormitory for them. They used plywood partitions in the middle so you couldnt look down the hall. Eventually, there was enough to take an entire floor. There was modification of offices to accommodate our newest airmen, and new ways of working emerged - less cussing, for one. Doris (from Maine) and I got together, and we got a little place in the town of Lockbourne. It was amazing what you could accomplish on $150 a month. It wasnt elaborate, and it only had a space heater in the dining room. When it got cold, the glass in the windows would freeze on the inside as well as out. Wed drag the mattress into the dining room to sleep at night in the winter. One of the things you do in the military is fill out what we called a dream sheet. They usually send you to a place opposite of what you put down. You didnt think I had and places up North on mine, did you? After I got to Lockbourne, I only had one entry on my Dream Sheet - Vietnam. I wasnt going to be in the military and not go to where the action was. So, the Spring of 1971 came, I had just received a line number for SSgt, and, with it, orders for Vietnam. Now come on mothers throughout the land, pack your boys off to Vietnam, Come on fathers dont hesitate, send your sons off before its too late, Be the first one on your block, to have your boy come home in a box. Off, I go, goodbye Doris, but first, stops in LA, San Francisco and Seattle. to be continued... PS. I am managing to get one of these chapters done daily, but, since I am on my once a decade vacation, it will be a little later in the day. We will return to normal next week.
