Dark, smoky and crowded 6 a.m. briefing this morning. The fire is currently 76,376 acres in size, 10% containment (south side looking good). The fire grew by about 3,000 acres overnight, mostly by backing downslope into canyons. Todays concerns include changes in the weather. Late afternoon winds are expected to come from the east and northeast. Winds will be strongest at the higher elevations and on the ridge tops. Humidity is expected to be lower and temperatures higher, which is likely to increase fire activity from yesterday. No structures are reported damaged or destroyed. About 2,800 people are affected by mandatory and advisory evacuations. About 12,000 residences remain threatened, which is the same as reported yesterday. As a reminder, your best information about the evacuation situation is online at pio.edso.org. Highway 50 has reopened. Expect delays and partial lane closures. Consult CalTrans road condition web site and phone number for the latest information. The King Fire has grown to the point that its necessary to have coordinated management organizations (teams) at both the north and south sides. More information on that later.
