Born on the old Bacon Ranch, he moved to the Conder homeplace when he was 4 months old. He lived on the same land for 87 years. Mr. Conder was the surprise twin for his parents, Ivy Conder Sr. and Beulah Elmore Conder. He was very close to his twin brother Dennis, who was killed while serving in the U.S. Army on Okinawa during World War II. Conder Park in Killeen was named in honor of Dennis. Mr. Conder grew up farming with mules and rode his horse Old Joe with Dennis to Willow Springs School. He graduated from Killeen High School in 1943. While in high school, he played football for Leo Buckley and Lee Peebles. After graduation, Mr. Peebles took him to his alma mater, Texas Christian University, where Mr. Conder would have attended school and played football. Before he was able to attend college, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He served in the 4th Division while stationed in Hawaii, Iwo Jima and Japan. He went ashore the second day of the battle at Iwo Jima. Returning home safe to his family was the first miracle he experienced. He was very proud to be a Marine and sang the Marine song often. After World War II, he worked for Brown & Root building the Tunnels at Killeen Base. He was seriously injured while working at his job in 1948, and six months of recovery brought miracle No. 2. Mr. Conder married the love of his life, Dorothy, on May 24, 1950, and they celebrated their 61st anniversary this past May. They shared everything in life, including weekends at the deer lease, work, family and many summers on Belton Lake. Mr. Conder started working for the Killeen Post Office in 1949 as a clerk. He retired in 1987 as a rural mail carrier. In 1985 he was honored to be selected the Outstanding Rural Mail Carrier of the Year for the state of Texas. He treasured the many postal friends he made here and across the state. Mr. Conder was a member of the Killeen Masonic Lodge for 65 years, as well as the Karem Shrine, Scottish Rite and Order of the Eastern Star. He loved hunting and fishing, and the stories from those times will live with his friends and family for years to come.
