Day 1 of the 2014 IIHF Mens World Championships is complete. Here is what happened today in Minsk. The defending silver medallists were given a rude awakening, especially in the first period, as Russia shut out Switzerland 5-0; Leonardo Genoni made 26 saves and Luca Cunti won eleven faceoffs for the Swiss while Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and an assist and Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves for the Russians. It had to take a shootout but it was enough for an upset as France defeated Canada 3-2; Stephane Da Costa had two goals and Pierre-Édouard Bellemare had the shootout winner for the French while Brayden Schenn and Erik Gudbranson had the regulation tallies for the Canadians. The host team was just completely overpowered in every sense as the United States defeated Belarus 6-1; Alexei Kalyuzhny had an assist and Andrei Mezin faced 25 shots for the Belarusians while Jacob Trouba had two goals and John Gaudreau had a goal and two assists for the Americans. It was a battle between two countries who were one nation before many players in the tournament were even born as the Czech Republic beat Slovakia 3-2 in overtime; Michel Miklík had a goal and an assist and Ján Laco made 30 saves for the Slovaks while Ondřej Němec had a goal and an assist and Jakub Klepiš had the overtime winner for the Czechs.
