Day 15..... Gotta Dance .... I am not a dancer. If Im out at a bar or club, Ill be the one to sit at the table and watch everyones drinks, purses, phones, whatever...and I will be completely happy about that. If someone drags me out onto the dance floor, I will do one of two things.... step-touch and snap my fingers or do my Im really trying, but this is worse than Elaine on Seinfeld dance. The only time this isnt true is at square dancing, and there they tell me exactly how to move and where to go! As Im reading Quiet and Pastrix, its being pounded into my head that, on the surface, our world is a dichotomy. In Quiet, its the introverts vs. the extroverts. In Pastrix, its fundamental Christians who arent acting like Christians vs. people who live on the fringe of society and truly care about others. Of course, both these statements are extreme simplifications of the essence of these great books. However, when we look at dichotomies, it is often easy to add a layer of judgement to those two sides. One side must be the good side and one side must be the bad side. Again, this is an oversimplification, but it cant be ignored that these judgements tend to lead to stereotypes which, in turn, can lead to prejudices. Instead of looking at two sides of an issue, lets think of the two sides of a coin. Is heads the good side? Is tails the bad side? No, thats ridiculous. Whats the saying.... they are two sides of the same coin? Would it still be called a quarter and worth 25 cents if the heads side vanished? No, you need both parts to come together and make it a whole quarter. We need both sides, without judgement, to see that a quarter (or person) reaches its full potential. Is it a good or bad thing that Im not a dancer? It is neither a good or bad thing, it just is. It makes me who I am, and that is perfectly fine. Just because Im not a dancer doesnt mean I cant appreciate great skill and energy in other dancers, though. ;)
