Day 3 - Monterey to Big Sur - 40 miles This is the shortest day, but it will be a bit harder than Day 2. You definitely want to get up early today! The beginning of this day is probably the best view you are going to see on the ride. 17 Mile Drive is stunning, especially in the early morning. You will be stopping a lot and taking lots and lots of pictures. Once we get through this we hit Carmel. If you don’t mind a bit of a steep climb I’m told there is a great coffee shop on the main street. The second half of this day is the beginning of the climbing into Big Sur. Nothing super steep, just long, gradual climbs and some bridges. Right before you get to our camp you will see all of the bikes parked at a little restaurant on the right. This is the River Inn. You can get great burgers and food here and eat while sitting in the river! It’s a tradition that everyone loves. Most riders can easily get to here by lunch time. Big Sur is the first camp with washing machines, so be sure to wash what you need to wash! The washing machines are located in the very back of the campground. It’s quite a walk from where we camp, so I ride my bike back there. There are only about 4 machines, so the sooner you get in line the faster you’ll be done. You will need quarters! This is also the only campsite that you need quarters to use the showers. They usually provide them for you, but it’s a good idea to bring a roll of quarters with you, just in case. There’s a nice gift shop in the lodge that has snacks and medicines if you need anything and there’s a great swimming hole in the campground and lots of hikes as well.
