Day 37. Samuel Taylor to Mill Valley. Today was all about the - TopicsExpress

Day 37. Samuel Taylor to Mill Valley. Today was all about the mountain biking in fairfax. I went to the local bike shop to purchase a day pass and to convince them to look after my gear for the day. Then I was off. About 3km from town is Camp Tamarancho... Mtb bike single track. It was really tough. Not only am I tired, but these are the trails I remember as a teenager. No grooming of trails here, I you ride it or walk it but no moving any rock or root in the way. The result, though fun... Is that it is absolutely bone jarring holding on down some of that. Overall my bike and I did great. There was one time I nearly went of the bars, but just held it together. It was hot and gruelling, 500m gained in under 13km of single track plus about 100m in the 3km to get there, and did I mention it was as hot as Hades? It was well worth it for the views and the ride. Apparently someone counted and there are 44 switch backs... Which I need more practice on. Some of the trail I would have walked if I had my way... But the single trail was so narrow in places that riding it was the only option. Got a great view of Mt Tampalais...the supposed birth place of mountain biking. I filmed a bit of riding but unfortunately the battery was going flat, it seems I filmed the sections that were rough as hell and didnt film the super smooth flowy bits...except for the Flowtrail. Basically a downhill pump track. Even though you barely had to peddle, my quads were burning on the way down. But it was a hell of a lotta fun. I am now shattered and due a day (or more) off the bike. My back is cramping and my legs are tired. It has been a really big four days and perhaps the hardest (it is hard to compare earlier on in the trip as I am a little fitter). I have lined up places to stay the next two nights in Marin before heading over the bridge into San Francisco on the weekend. I will probably start heading further south on Sunday or Monday.
