Day 406 Lakota and Leonitis - I realize there are a lot of pictures but today was a really really big day for Lakota and if you look at the pictures in order it follows a progression of how she acclimated. As you know, Lakota has had a potential adopter who has been spending time with her. She has come several times and has spent time with Lakota and started to build a bond with her. Lakota took to this kind woman almost immediately and showed very little nervousness even the first time she met her. That was our first indicator that this might be a good match for Lakota since she felt so at ease with this person almost immediately. Today Lakota met the rest of the family! She got to meet her potential new dad as well as her potential new brother an absolutely gorgeous Golden Retreiver/English Setter mix. This was a crucial step as Lakota would of course need to be able to get along with the other dog in the household and it was great to meet the other person in the house as well. Well, it went great as you can see. We started off walking the dogs together on the trail and after some nervousness as you can see in the first picture with Lakota looking back to make sure Jenifer was still there, they settled in well and had a nice walk. Once the dogs had gotten acquainted on the walk we moved into the backyard area and let them meet off leash and it went great. I backed off a bit as your can see in the next series of pictures to let Lakota have some time to acclimate to her new friends both human and canine. She was nervous but she didnt run off to the other side of the yard or come running to me which she could have easily done. She chose to stay in the same area as her new friends and stay close. She became more comfortable after a couple of minutes and we moved to a smaller area for them to sit down. She stayed out of the circle for a minute or two but then came right up and hung out with the group of us sitting and began taking treats from everyone and being very comfortable. I could not have been more proud of her. This is a big step for Lakota and a big hurdle out of the way moving towards her future. The family will likely do a foster to adopt with Lakota so she can acclimate into a new home prior to making everything official. Everyone keep your fingers crossed! Ive known this meeting was going to take place all week and Ive been a nervous wreck. I am so glad it went smoothly! Im so proud of our girl!!!!! More tomorrow!
