Day 6 May 2, 2014 (sorry the days are out of order!) Had breakfast at 8, it was so nice to be back at the 60 Feet house in Kampala. Our internet is down so I couldnt send this right away. Poor Dr Dave is so badly swollen and his bed bug bites look so terrible today. It is decided that half the team will stay back and relax today and the rest of us will head to the remand centre we couldnt get into at the beginning of the week. Before heading off from 60 Feet we helped Ruth make pancakes and they drove us down to the market to take a look around for a while. The market was the best Ive been to, it is a wholesale market so there is no haggling or harassing and as you weave down the narrow isles between tarps layed out with the wares spread out. At around 1 myself, Dr Emily, Steve, Dr Mark and Amber took off to adjust the kids. After some confusion of where we were to go first we ended up going to the Remand Centre we couldnt get into the beginning if the week. This is were the children go that are awaiting sentencing. They should only be here a few months however sometime it is longer. The facility is very over crowded in the boys dorm which some boys can not leave and a very small area for recreation or group counselling. We walked to the boys who were in a small food line area where some medical work is also done and we got locked in. Some boys can come and go from different areas in the center however some other boys are restricted into certain areas. We were invited into the court yard and I explained with a translator what we do as chiropractors. We are doctors who work with their hands. The brain and spinal cord control your body and tell every part of our body what to do. When the nerves are not working right your body can not work right and heal itself. When we do adjustment to the spine your brain and body talk better, your body is healthier, your immune system works better, you will do better in school and you will be stronger. I cautioned them not to do this on each other that we took many years of school to learn how to do this. We then asked them who wanted to be healthier and stronger and hands shot up. Back to the tables we went and we started adjusting the boys 10 at a time allowed in the room. At first many were standing either with their arms crossed and tentative until they felt the release of the cervical adjustment and then smiles started to emerge from their faces. We took turns adjusting on the 2 tables, while I waited I sat next to a few boys who smiled and tried to talk in their few words of English. When I put my hands on them to adjust them I just wanted to pass on love to them, to make them feel like everything was going to be ok. I felt such a heaviness there that I havent ever felt before. We finished up with the boys and I adjusted the warden and another female staff in her office while the rest of the team went down to adjust the few girls in the facility, two of which were pregnant. The girls flirted with the boys from across the compound through the bars which made me laugh as girls will be girls no matter where you are. They giggled and waved as the boys stood across the way trying to look cool waving back. We packed up our things and headed to the Remand Centre down the road with the smaller kids we were at earlier in the week. This time just to play. We brought out skipping ropes and nail polish. The kids crowded around to pick out their color and get their little nails painted with bright colors. The boys all wanted theirs done too picking out the brightest pinks and reds. We got back to the house, had dinner and I fell into bed after a day that hurt my heart.
