DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, October 1, 2013 – beware of fake relay calls someone is using the relay service to call some deaf people, telling them that a FCC representative is coming to their house to inspect their relay equipment. This call is a FAKE. The FCC is angry about it and will be looking into it (after the federal government reopens!) - Arizona battles Federal government over deaf housing issue The Apache ASL Trails is a deaf senior citizens housing building in Tempe, Arizona. The state allows it to be 100 percent deaf and hard of hearing. The US Housing and Urban Development does not want it to be 100 percent deaf, saying it violates federal laws on discrimination. This battle has been going on for two years. The Arizona members of the congress are pushing the HUD to make a decision to protect the deaf residents. As with the fake deaf relay calls, this issue has to wait for the federal government to reopen. - Airlines may not be telling the truth about captions Hearing passengers can enjoy movies during their flights. In most cases, deaf passengers can’t – because these movies are not captioned. Could these movies be captioned? Yes, very easily but for some reason, these airlines are not willing to put in captions, or even subtitles. Airlines traveling over American skies are under pressure to install captions, whereas overseas airlines are not obligated. ADA does not apply to them. What is the best solution?
