Dear Colleague, Please note the upcoming yoga symposium of interest: Hosted by CONFER, UK Yoga and Health: Research and Practice An International Conference April 3-6, 2014 The Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre Thornhaugh Street, London, UK Examining yoga as an effective treatment for cardiovascular disease, immunological, respiratory, metabolic and neurological disorders, depression, pain, stress and the care of cancer patients This years yoga research conference, Yoga and Health, Research and Practice, is an interface between the worlds of healthcare and yoga, bringing together yogis and medical practitioners to share research, practices and knowledge on how to provide yoga as part of the care of clinically ill patients. This is a unique opportunity for yoga teachers to develop a deeper understanding of the healing properties of yoga, both in terms of the scientific evidence and psycho-physiological mechanisms that underpin its curative effects. The programme of presentations is also designed for medical practitioners interested in the benefits of mind-body practices. The latest research findings will be presented. Preconference events on April 3rd include a meeting of yoga therapists and a workshop on how to conduct and interpret yoga research. The main conference includes both keynote research lectures and workshops/practitioners guides on yoga therapy topics. The research evidence for yogas therapeutic role in the following conditions will be reviewed: Cardiovascular disorders Neurological disorders Musculoskeletal problems Metabolic disorders Quality of life for those with cancer Stress Depression The management of pain Keynote Speakers Dr. Luciano Bernardi, M.D., is a Professor of Internal Medicine at Policlinico S.Matteo, Pavia, Italy, and teaches Sports Medicine at the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Pavia. Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, M.D., is Professor and Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Distinguished Clinical Professor, Fudan University Cancer Hospital, Shanghai, China. Dr. Holger Cramer, Ph.D., is Yoga Research Director at the Department of Internal and Integrative Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. Dr. Innes, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, West Virginia School of Public Health and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Virginia Dept of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Center for the Study of Complementary and Alternative Therapies. Dr. Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Womens Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Director of Research for the Kundalini Research Institute, Research Associate at the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine and author of the Harvard Medical School ebook Your Brain on Yoga. Heather Mason is the founder of the Minded Institute an organization that both trains professionals and develops, implements, and researches innovative methods for mental health treatment based on the fusion of yoga therapy, mindfulness techniques, neuroscience, and psychotherapy. Goran Boll is the founder of The MediYoga Institute (IMY) in Stockholm, Sweden, an organization that trains professionals, participates in research on yoga within the Medical System of Sweden and holds open classes for the general public and one-on-one therapeutic sessions. Dr. Robin Monro, Ph.D., is a yoga therapist and founder-director of the Yoga Biomedical Trust. Originally a research scientist in molecular biology, he focuses on research and development of yoga therapy for lower back pain and is co-author of one of the first books in the West on yoga therapy, Yoga for Common Ailments. The conference is accepting submissions for a poster session.
