Dear David, Your concern, the warmth that you clearly have for Scotland and for the Scots is most touching. You stand as the latest in a long line of Conservative politicians, some even from this country, who have learnt much from our own great thinkers and statesmen. Few countries can claim to have been as important in Enlightenment thinking than has Scotland. Equally, you and many of your Tory colleagues have seen Scotland as a problem to be ignored, or a cash cow to be exploited. The loss of our heavy industry at a time when North Sea Oil was coming on tap served only to highlight the sad lack of interest in the welfare of this part of an increasingly disunited Kingdom. Large parts of Scotland remain blighted by the failure to re-invest that oil money into places that used to rely on heavy engineering, coal mining or steelmaking and to help the men and women of those areas, and indeed of all of Scotland recover their sense of self-worth and dignity that was lost with the industry. You and those before you preferred to spend the money from oil on tax breaks for the wealthy and foreign adventures and wars rather than, as has our near neighbour Norway, on investment for the people of these islands. Now you stand to lose us, I hope that the tears and regrets are genuine. I have to tell you, though, that this is not about you, not about the Conservative Party, and not about England. It is not about us becoming foreign or Going anywhere. We dont hate you, and there is no sense in which we are telling you to Eff Off. It is about us taking our rightful and proud place amongst other nations. I do hope that you can soon learn to live in harmony with your neighbour.
