Dear Dr. King, I am writing to tell you that nowadays you are a holiday. Very soon, I think, in most places you will be a sale and a day-off. And although I really do appreciate that, Im just checking in because that is not the you that I remember. I was a young boy the day the bullet pierced your black skin; ironically revealing the point youd made all along- underneath we really are all the same. And as what is the same in all of us, flowed out of just you, I wonder if you died thinking, This was all worth it. Until that day I had glimpsed you on the news--- portrayed as troublemaker, instigator, rabble rouser; disturber of a large piece of our American Mind. Angry faces spat words like, Martin Luther Coon!!! when you stood where most men would only shake heads and mutter, That just aint right. And though you were scared, you were more brave than scared, and you walked in Jerusalem just like John! The Manhood of a People. From a troublemaker and race baiter to a holiday and a sale. From a sufferer and a struggler to a day off and a Facebook like. Martin, I asked you was it worth it We know you as Dr. King but, I believe that we are wrong. You were actually an ordinary man who came to be known as Dr. King. An ordinary man with a wife. And children. Who grew up fatherless. We forget that a man left his children so that we can choose to articulate a Human Dignity that we tremble to approach. We applaud you because WE are the dream that you had. And though we like you on Facebook, make sure you always identify yourself when you approach. Otherwise, if we see you on WorldStar as the humanity of a young girl getting violated, well like that too. It might even get more likes than Happy Birthday Dr. King! Identify yourself Martin. Dont mistakingly join a Civil Rights march without asking, cause we might just be lined up for new sneakers--- wouldnt want to mistake you for someone who jumped the line and have to whip out camera phones faster than you can have a dream. We love you Dr. King, but in your absence weve developed other strange likes. In conclusion Martin, I believe you had a dream, but I dont believe that you died for a dream. I believe you died for a reality that was trapped in a future that is now a present. It was wrapped in a time that is now a present. Had you lived you might have become a BET special, a presidential endorsement, or an ABC Movie of The Week. But instead, of course, you died. And now, ironically, we are the only ones dreaming....
