Dear Editor, New York City is the single most important city in the world. Upstate New York is a much larger geographical area, mostly rural, and with clear political and economic differences. It is common sense that the two should be on separate but equal representation, with neither governing the other. I believe the views of the people who live in the upstate and downstate areas of New York State are very different and really should be divided into two completely autonomous regions. The people of –NAME- County should request our NYS legislators to support an amendment to our New York State constitution to divide our state into two completely autonomous regions; the New Amsterdam Region and the New York Region with only a token state government. This is not an idea of a single political party, nor of the conservatives or the liberals. I believe this is the desire of most upstate New Yorkers. We wish to be free from the power of New York City and believe that our vote does count. I understand that this idea will more than unlikely pass. However, shouldn’t we at least try to fight for liberation from the unconstitutional powers that are forced upon us, and take the effort to preserve our rights as Americans? Let’s not do this individually, let’s do this as a county, together. Set aside our political party’s agendas and stand for what we agree on as upstate New Yorkers. Let’s become a region. Let’s become New Amsterdam. newamsterdamny.org
