Dear Friends, As-Salam-Aleikum. Twenty years ago, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre opened its doors to patients with the mission ‘to act as a model institution to alleviate the suffering of patients with cancer, through the application of modern methods of curative and palliative therapy, irrespective of their ability to pay, the education of healthcare professionals and the public and to perform research into the causes and treatment of cancer’. Today, it fills me with pride to see that Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre sets the standard for cancer treatment in Pakistan. It has succeeded in empowering the most qualified health care professionals with state-of-the-art technology and advanced diagnostic methods. Since inception, nearly 75% of our patients have continued to receive financially supported treatment and about 70% are provided completely free cancer care. This is, indeed, a unique institution that truly values life and makes no distinction between patients based on their ability to pay. The World Health Organization has also recognized us for achieving excellence in our work. We have continued to provide specialized education and training to healthcare and support staff that has not only helped the Hospital in its pursuit of excellence but has also helped to raise healthcare standards throughout the country. Our cancer awareness and research efforts are focused on educating the public about early detection and prevention of cancer and identifying the causes of cancer within our own community. All of this progress has been made possible only because of the support of well-wishers such as yourself. Our budget for the year 2015 is Rs. 7 billion and we need your generous donations to continue to provide world-class cancer care to the people of Pakistan. The opening of Pakistan’s second Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, in Peshawar, which will enable us to treat even more cancer patients, is currently planned for the end of 2015. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital is truly the story of the success of the collective will of our people and an affirmation of some of the greatest positives in our society. Over the last two decades, we have together saved thousands of precious lives, which has only been made possible by the generous support of friends such as yourself. Nevertheless, our long journey continues, and I hope very much that I can continue to count on your support as we build on the achievements of the last twenty years. I look forward to your continued support for our mission in years to come.
