Dear Friends, I came across the following interesting words while going through todays Hindustan Times and thought I should share with you. Our words help us form a better school of thought. 1. Juggernaut : something (such as a force, campaign, or movement) that is extremely large and powerful and cannot be stopped BJP Juggernaut keeps rolling on. 2. Astute : very clever and quick at seeing what to do in a particular situation, especially how to get an advantage an astute businessman / politician / observer; It was an astute move to sell the shares then. SYN shrewd 3. Come up / turn up trumps : to do what is necessary to make a particular situation successful, especially when this is sudden or unexpected: I didn’t honestly think he’d pass the exam but he came up trumps on the day. 4. Pull something off : to succeed in doing sth difficult: We pulled off the deal. I never thought you’d pull it off. 5. Rue: to feel bad about sth that happened or sth that you did because it had bad results He rued the day they had bought such a large house. SYN regret 6. Rueful: feeling or showing that you are sad or sorry She gave a rueful smile ‘So this is goodbye,’ she said ruefully 7. Alchemy: 1.a form of chemistry studied in the Middle Ages which involved trying to discover how to change ordinary metals into gold. 2. a mysterious power or magic that can change things. 8. Razzmatazz: a lot of noisy exciting activity that is intended to attract people’s attention: The documentary focuses on the razzmatazz of an American political campaign 9. 2. Landscape: everything you can see when you look across a large area of land, especially in the country: the bleak / rugged / dramatic, etc. landscape of the area; the woods and fields that are typical features of the English landscape; an urban / industrial landscape. We can expect changes in the political landscape.
