Dear Friends, I must speak up a little more on this because when it comes to Howard there is a mistaken impression. I must begin by saying, anyone and everyone has the right to deposit their personal papers--as their personal property--any where in the world where they want them to be. In fact, they can deposit them in the trash and burn them up as long as the local ordinances allow. As for Howard, we are far from broke and far from being choked. The people who run Howard have plenty of resources, and I am sure they want more--just like I am sure that many wealthy institutions want more. Like many universities, Howard has to set priorities, and if I were President for a month the humanities and social sciences would be king and the business school, the medical school, the dental school, the hospital, the engineering school, the law school, and ....would hardly know I had cut their budgets by just a tad. The rules on funding the humanities and social sciences at all universities today, apply to Howard, too. We are not broke and what you are witnessing--in the case of Howard--cannot be laid at President Obamas door. Since coming to Howard from the Schomburg, Howard Dodson have been rebuilding not only the library but also the Moorland-Spingarn, our special collections. Almost twenty years ago, when I was touting the Schomburg as the great collection, it was Howard Dodson who corrected me, saying that no collection was better than Howard Universitys. Howard has brought his experience to Howard and the University has invested money to improve both. The Moorland-Spingarn is not in dire straights and more collections are coming available everyday and our research hours have been expanded. Having said this,if I as an individual direct my papers be put at my undergraduate institution or in Mickey Mouses archive--that is my damn business. Its not the races business. Im all about black people--especially our freedom to choose.
