Dear Friends, I want to thank everyone that voted for me during the SMRR Convention. We were 6 votes short in winning the endorsement in the first round of voting. In the second round, I was the top vote getter among two incumbents. That alone is a victory and demonstrates that our community wants change at SMC. We all learned this weekend that the SMRR Steering Committee had the option to fill the slate with two additional endorsements but instead decided to give only one endorsement to the candidate that came in 2nd in the same voting round as me. Although I accept the decision of the SMRR Steering Committee, I hoped that they would have followed the will of the membership and went with the top vote getter in that round of voting. Regardless, I am not deterred and I plan to work harder to win in the November election. There are those that believe that SMC is doing an excellent job at serving students and residents. I, along with many who remember students being pepper sprayed for opposing a two-tier tuition proposal or programs such as Emeritus College being threatened with cuts, disagree. My candidacy represents a true progressive resident voice on the SMC Board of Trustees. I intend to bring community back into SMC by ensuring that we have a place at the table as decisions are made regarding programs for students & our seniors, availability of classes while pushing for a good neighbor initiative. Once elected to the SMC Board of Trustees, I intend to establish a more accessible and affordable path for our local students to attend SMC. With your support, we can ensure that SMC does a better job at closing the achievement gap and in providing equity in the programs and classes to all students. What you can do to help put a resident voice on the SMC Board of Trustees •Donate to my campaign • Volunteer to speak to voters to get the vote out by signing up for phone banking or door to door canvassing.
