Dear Friends, it is a very sad time for us in Santa Barbara. We are doing everything we can to make sure the students are supported in every way possible, especially those who live in Isla Vista who experienced first hand the dreadful events of last Friday. We are all still recovering from the horrible acts of violence that were committed in the heart of our community. Six UCSB students were tragically killed and many others injured. It is far too common to see students killing students in our schools and campuses and the devastation left behind from these kinds of events is far reaching and significant. Six families lost their children this week unnecessarily. It is such a terrible loss at a time when a young person is embarking on the most exciting journey of their life. UCSB is a wonderful place to study and it can be healing and inspiring to live here in such beauty (even though I think we take it for granted sometimes). The community has come together and hopefully we will be able to address the issues that lead to such terrible events and avoid them in the future. Until that time, all of us, including the educators and students of these college campuses affected by such violence, will appreciate the moments we have together and do everything we can to protect one another and live our best life possible.
