Dear Friends, please join us in showing our support for Liberians in the U.S. at the Liberian National Immigration/Ebola Virus Hearing on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, in HC 8 Capitol Building, Washington DC. There will be remarks by Members of Congress, immigration advocate and health organizations. The conference will highlight the need for an immediate extension of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for approximately 3,600 eligible Liberians living in the United States and the efforts supporting the extension. The DED will expire on September 30, 2014. Its extension is imperative because Liberia is not equipped to handle the return of thousands of Liberians who have lived in the U.S. for over a decade. In addition, the security and infrastructure challenges that would develop from the Liberian’s mass return to their home country would be devastating to the region. Recently, the Ebola virus has claimed 466 deaths most of which were mainly health workers and caregivers. There has been an immediate closure of all schools across the country, the quarantine of some communities as well as restricted and limited travels. This aggressive outbreak is yet another reason to ensure that the Liberians who have been living in the United States under the DED are allowed to stay. The Conference will also connect the DED to the greater issue of a malfunctioning patchwork of immigration policies that needs to be reformed with the purpose of creating a roadmap toward citizenship.
