Dear Friends, we have had a setback for development on lower Georgia Avenue in Ward 1. Howard University has decided to cancel its development agreement with Cohen Companies, for the Howard Town Center project…a huge endeavor running along a long block north of V Street. I can say from years of involvement with this project, that we have come too far with too much energy to stop this dead in its tracks. What’s at stake? --Millions of dollars in tax relief that I authored and the council approved. --A decade of work negotiating the intricacies of this agreement with a complex land swap for a parcel on Sherman Avenue --Indeed, the revitalization of lower George Avenue with all the prosperity it will bring. Just days ago we dedicated Progression Place—the new home of the United Negro College Fund—at 7th and S (in Ward One). The Howard Theater is up and running. All of that is but a stone’s throw from the Town Center. We don’t want to lose this great momentum. The parties must find common ground and agreement, so that this can go forward. Please count on my continued support! Bests Councilmember Jim Graham
