Dear Governor Bryant, I have recently become aware of - TopicsExpress

Dear Governor Bryant, I have recently become aware of Mississippi Senate Bill 2681, entitled “The Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act.” bill passing the House and Senate. I find that I object to this bill on two primary grounds. First, the title of the bill is misleading. The implication is that the level of religious freedom that will be granted with this act is a level that has previously existed in Mississippi. If this level of religious freedom that will be “restored” with this act has ever existed in this state, it was prior to the Civil Rights Movement. Based on the title of this bill, it appears to be a reactionary movement, a return to a less civilized era. Second, and more importantly, the way this bill is worded, it claims to be preventing the state from interfering with free expression of religion. While this may be the case, in preventing the state from interfering, this bill would allow people within the state to essentially perform any action they wish under the auspices of religious belief. While I would like to believe that we, as a people, are civilized enough to not behave in this manner, I have no doubt in my mind that if this bill does become law, it is only a matter of time before we begin to see lynchings once again, and said behavior will be claimed to be part of someones religion. As a follower of Christ Jesus, I know what Gods expectations are for me. However, I have also been in enough churches to know how easy it is to prooftext the Scripture and use the Bible as a weapon. Ultimately, I fear that this bill, if passed, will fall into the latter category, and will become just another bludgeon for those who choose to make God in their own image. With all this in mind, I strongly encourage you to veto SB2681. Sincerely and with great concern, CeCe Garrett #SB2681 #PhilBryant #LoveWins #ashamedofMISSISSIPPI #EVERYonesWelcomeAtWalkFellowship
