Dear “Gum Chewer”, This is a letter from a medical doctor to you. Stay with me in this concise piece as the negative effects of chewing gum are unmasked. • Do you know frequent gum chewing may trigger Temporomandibular Joint Disorder? This is when the jaw muscle experiences imbalance (if you chew on one side more than the other). The jaw will experience a painful chronic condition due to this one-sided chewing often done while chewing gum. Anytime you overuse a certain set of muscles, it can lead to contracted muscles and related pain, headaches, earaches and toothache over a period of time. • Gastrointestinal Problems may be experienced as a result of frequency in gum chewing. During gum-chewing, excess air which can contribute to abdominal pain and bloating seen with irritable syndrome occurs. Also, you send your body physical signals that food is about to enter your body, therefore enzymes and acids that facilitate chewing and proper digestion are released. This is when bloating is caused because there is an over-production of stomach acid which is not actually used. Later, when there’s an intake of real food which must be digested, the body runs out of acid to carry out this action. • Tooth damage (sugary or sugar-free gum) Chewing a gum with sugar can be likened to rinsing your mouth with sugary water (or bathing your teeth with sugar) while you chew. This can contribute to tooth decay. However, Sugar-free gums may not cause you tooth decay but they contain acidic flavourings and preservatives that may in fact lead to dental erosion even if it contains cavity-fighting xylitol. The erosion is gradual until the critical stage where by the teeth is literally dissolved. • Sheep Byproducts Chewing gums often contains lanolin, a waxy substance that is derived from sheep wool, to help stay soft. While not necessarily dangerous to your health, chewing on lanolin is not exactly appetising. • Release Mercury From Your Filings For persons with mercury fillings in their teeth, chewing gum gradually rubs off the mercury from the hole. While chewing, mercury vapour is released in the mouth, mixes up with spittle and quickly finds its way into your bloodstream. This causes inordinate processes in your tissues. INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN CHEWING GUM - Gum base - investigators found it’s a blend of elastomers, resins, plasticizers, fillers etc. - Calcium Casein Peptone - once related to baby formula poisonings. - Butylated Hydroxytoluene - preservative in chewing gum but has been linked to organ system toxicity, including kidney and liver damage, hyperactivity in children etc. - Titanium Dioxide - whitening agent in chewing gum but has been linked to autoimmune disorders such as asthma. - Artificial sweetness - this decreases red blood cells, causes male infertility, enlarged kidneys, unnecessary weight gaining and migraine. RECOMMENDATION - Sip on a glass of water when you are experiencing unusual breathe as a result of a meal. - Gum chewing can only be done very rarely or right before a meal when the acids and enzyme may be beneficial. - Be active. - There are a number of acupuncture meridians at your fingertips. By tapping your fingers on your body, you can release some stress and stay awake instead of - chewing gum. - Take fruits after your meal instead of chewing gum. Yours sincerely, Anti-gum chewer.
